How to Build a High Benchmark Performance IT Department ?

Larry Xu

It is widely known that the Information Technology (IT) department has a love-and-hate relationship with an enterprise. On the one hand, an IT department has long been considered a non-revenue-generating cost center. On the other hand, the rapid emergence of new technologies, a multitude of innovative new applications, and the increasingly lower hardware costs have all contributed to the increasing importance of IT departments in all organizations. (See my previous writing: How to Improve IT Department Productivity?) A high performing IT department can contribute significantly to a company's bottom line.

What is a high performing IT department? A high performing IT department can be defined as a group of people with specific roles and complementary talents and skills, aligned with and committed to a common business purpose, who consistently show high levels of collaboration and innovation that produce superior results. The high performance IT team is regarded as tight-knit, focused on their goal and nothing else. Team members are so devoted to their purpose that they will surmount any barrier to achieve the company’s business goals. By this definition, there are a few things a company needs to do in building a high performing IT department:

  • Find the Right Combination of People.
  • Involve IT Department in Business Decisions.
  • Invest in a Good System and Tools.
  • Measure against the Benchmark and Reward High Performance.

When an IT department is difficult and its members irritable, it can seem like a nuisance. But when the department is engaged and effective, it can smooth a company’s operations and add to the bottom line. In today’s fast changing technological environment, building a high performing IT department has become a necessity, rather than a luxury, for a company’s goal and objective: profitability and growth.
