SAP Business Warehouse Upgrade Roadmap

SAP Business Warehouse (also known as SAP NetWeaver Business Warehouse or SAP BW) is the cornerstone of SAP’s Strategic Enterprise Data Warehouse solution and runs on industry standard RDBMS and SAPs HANA in-memory DBMS.

SAP HANA is an in-memory, column-oriented, relational database management system developed and marketed by SAP AG. HANA's architecture is designed to handle both high transaction rates and complex query processing on the same platform

According to recent trends, a lot of people are wondering which direction will SAP BW march in the future. Many customers are worrying about whether SAP BW will be replaced by HANA sooner or later. Since HANA still has some flaws, though SAP does a great effort to promote it, the sales performance still has not beat expectations. Here is where BW and HANA stand:

Right now, in the market. More Customers prefer to choose BW on HANA which can combine advantages of both. This is a signal that may give us hints about the development path of BW in the future. After all, HANA is a trend and in-memory computing will become more and more popular in the coming decade.

The below infographic shows a roadmap of SAP BW:

It is not hard for us to find that BW will have deeper interaction with HANA within the next support packages. That’s the reason I believe BWA will finally be replaced by HANA. New Customers will no longer need BWA to speed up performance of BW. HANA is a better choice for them.

The truth is that HANA is not only for SAP customers. Actually, HANA is an independent, agnostic, high-performance data foundation which has access to any source of data. In the third phase of this road map, through HANA, BW finally finds its way to connect with outside world of SAP.
